It’s bittersweet, really. The final flights of the shuttles are not upwards, with four million pounds of force lifting them skywards, but rather strapped to the back of what is little more than a commercial airplane.
The hollowed out carcass of the mighty machine takes one last, slow flight to its final resting place. A monument to all the program accomplished, certainly, but its days of adventure and exploration are over.

This is the final one in the series for now, and it’s a great reminder of why we need to reach for the stars.

Discovery sits on launch pad 39A, November 3rd, 2010
Well, I don’t get to be there to see it first hand, but tomorrow afternoon, if everything goes according to plan, the Space Shuttle Discovery will launch for the final time.
Follow along with the mission status over at Spaceflightnow and see if you can tune in tomorrow at 13:50 PST for the launch, online at NASA TV (iPhone/iPad link) or on HDNet if you get that.
Well it looks like going to the shuttle launch on November 1st is just about a lock, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get to a landing.
